RE: Myrtle Beach WiFi CG

We are at MBTP right now and the signal strength has been very good but their service is so-so and not cheap. Last night, even though I had a very good signal strength, I could not connect to their sign on page. It was down. Other times my signal strength shows very good but the transfer rate is a lightning 1 mbps, and varies between 1 mbps and 11 mbps.
I think the connections are ok, just the ISP they use is lousy.

RE: Holiday Travel Park Myrtle Beach

Dogs generally are not allowed on the beach between hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm between Memorial Day and Labor day. Not sure how much it is enforced anyway. Plus, there is a long stretch of undeveloped beach just north of the campground that makes a great place to walk your dog. Very few people along that stretch except walkers. It is about 1.5 miles long.

RE: Holiday Travel Park Myrtle Beach

We have been going to Myrtle Beach Travel Park for many years. We like the location on the north side of MB. The park is smaller than the Big Three in south MB, but is still quite large.
We always ask for a site as close to the beach as possible since that is why we go. The vast majority of sites are on the beach area and all are pull through. They are set up to take advantage of the prevailing sea breeze so, while there is no shade there, most of the time the breeze keeps us cool. There is grass in the areas around most parts of each beach area site other than the general area that rigs are parked.
There are a number of sites along the lake that many people prefer since they are more grassy and less sand. Third, there are the sites in the woods which are a bit far from the beach but well shaded.
MBTP has been in the process of building all new bath houses, which are very nice. Most on the beach area have been replaced while the ones in the woods have not been.
We like the fact that they do not rent golf cars to campers. The only ones permitted are for the full time residents that make up a small percentage of MBTP's population.
The campground is convenient to everything we want to do in MB. There is a Kroger on one end and a Walmart on the other end of Kings Road so picking up supplies is very easy. It is also close to the restaurants we usually visit while there.
We will be going there this Sunday for a week. The crowds will be gone and we look forward to a pleasant October week there this year.

Central NC Gas Availability

We are leaving central Virginia on Sunday for Myrtle Beach. I typically stop in the Asheboro area to fill up when I get to about a half tank although I can make it as far as I-95/SC 38 interchange without much worry. How are you folks in the US-220 corridor between Greensboro and Rockingham doing on gas or on as far as Bennettsville, SC doing on gas supplies? Thanks in advance for any information or advice.

We did the Yogi Bear too. It's your anniversary - go motel.
While I would normally want to camp, since it is your anniversary, make it special and stay at the Natural Bridge Hotel. Here is the website:

RE: Best Starting Point on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Enjoy your trip. I'm not sure how long you plan to stay on the parkway but be aware that the campgrounds directly on it will start shutting down toward the end of October. Dates vary but I think all of them will be closed by 10/31.

RE: Best Starting Point on the Blue Ridge Parkway

To clarify any confusion, the Skyline Drive starts in Front Royal Va and travels the length of Shenandoah National Park for 105 miles. Please be aware that there is a $15 fee collected at the entrance station to travel the Skyline Drive. The receipt is good for 7 days. There are several campgrounds in Shenandoah spaced along the route. Also, the maximum speed limit on the Drive is 35 mph.
The Blue Ridge Parkway starts at the end of the Skyline Drive at Afton, VA. It is 469 miles in length and ends at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. There is no fee to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway and there are numerous places to get on and off as necessary. There are a number of campgrounds spaced along the length of the parkway. The maximum speed limit on the BRP is 45 mph.
Enjoy your trip no matter where you start.

RE: I-65 near Gary Indiana

It was when we were in that area in late May. Just stay on US 30 through Merrillville and pick up IL route 394 north just a few miles over the state line. It takes you right to 80.

Hanna now appears to be setting its sights on the entire southeast coastline. Beware those camping on the beaches now.

RE: Best restaurants in Williamsburg Va???

But we didn't really like the overpriced Captain George's Seafood restaurant.
Agreed, you can drop 100 easy for 3 people. Ridiculous.
When Captain George's was reasonable, it was good. It may still be good, but for the prices they charge now, its not that good. The last time my wife and I ate there some 5 years ago it cost about $60. I have no idea what it is now and don't plan to find out.

It has changed course since my last post. Now you might want to reconsider going to the OBX. The map above changes as the NHC issues its updates.

If tropical depression 8 became Hanna, then here is the current projected path. Looks like it is going back south and away from the east coast.

RE: Skyline Drive or Blue Ridge Parkway?

If my memory serves me correctly when I lived in Culpeper, VA, Skyline Drive is the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Skyline Drive it the route through Shenandoah National Park and requires an entry fee ($15)to the park to drive it. The fee is good for a week so you can go in and out as needed.
The Blue Ridge Parkway connects with the Skyline Drive at the southern end of the S.D. and is a completely separate entity. It connects Shenandoah to the Great Smokys. There is no fee to travel the BRP.

RE: Canceling Reservations due to pending Hurricane?

We have never canceled a reservation but have been evacuated twice from Myrtle Beach Travel Park. They did refund us the nights we missed due to the evacuation both times.
In the past we have typically gone there during Labor Day week, which is the peak hurricane season. We have been lucky most years other than the two we were evacuated, but there have been other years when a hurricane did affect the weather even though it wasn't coming toward us. We would have wind, rain, or high surf even though the hurricane was far away.
This year we decided to wait until the first week of October to go down. We do have reservations at MBTP. They will issue refunds of the deposit if you have to cancel as long as it is at least 7 days prior to arrival. I do not know the policy should a hurricane be pending. Either way it is only $50 there so I figure I'll make my reservation and if I can't go due to a hurricane, I am only out $50, which is now about a half tank of gas.

RE: Fay is on the way

I certainly hope that Fay doesn't cause damage anywhere but we could sure use some rain from it up here in central Va. It is as dry as I have ever seen it here.

RE: Myrtle Beach in the fall

We usually go after Labor day to the travel park and there are plenty of open sites, but it never hurts to book ahead anyway. If your plans change you can get your deposit refunded provided it is over 7 days from your arrival date. You can also adjust your dates if needed, again if it is over 7 days from the original arrival date.
